Earthbox Gardening

Flowers grow with abandon in an Earthbox.

Flowers grow with abandon in an Earthbox.

If you have always wanted to grow your own veggies yet hated the thought of actually digging the ground, turning the ground, mulching the ground, buying the ground to add to the already turned ground, pulling the weeds, adding irrigation, digging the ground again to add irrigation, blah, blah, blah…then the Earthbox way of gardening is for you.  And ME!  You can plant veggies, flowers, trees, rose bushes, fruit…anything that gets planted can get planted in an Earthbox.  We are lucky here in Sarasota to have the inventor of the Earthbox, Blake Whisenant, and their experimental garden very close by.  I will show you some pictures next time I go to their garden and you will really drool.

All you have to do each day is put the hose into the tube and fill until water runs out the bottom.  Done.  Go inside and have a glass of wine…don’t judge!

I am growing Heirloom Black Krim tomatoes and cherry tomatoes, red, yellow and green peppers, sweet banana peppers, poblanos, serrano and sweet Marconi peppers.  Not to mention herbs, including basil, flat leaf Italian parsley, thyme, rosemary, mint and oregano.  Then I also have red leaf lettuce, romaine and green leaf lettuce.  The lettuce went from small to better eat it now in the last three days.  Yikes.  What to do with them?  Maybe a tuna salad lettuce wrap, the obvious salad, burger topping (which we used for our Easter picnic along with sliced sweet banana peppers for the dogs…hot dogs, not Fern and Jingle).

Can you say lettuce wrap?

Husky cherry tomatoes, unfortunately squirrels like them too. I will probably cover them with screening...hate those squirrels!

I planted these Earthboxes in February, the tomatoes need a bit more sun and heat and the leaves are turning a bit yellow on the bottom, which I will investigate tomorrow.  Sorry northerners, I know you wish to just see some grass and sun plus the fact that you were driving all willy nilly on our southern roads for the last four months so you really didn’t have time to plant your Earthboxes, but you will soon.

I was so excited at how large these were that I picked two yesterday, Easter, then realized they were the red peppers! Dang, not ready yet...need to focus.

Sweet banana peppers added to our "hotdogs" on Easter...yuuummmyyy!

Go plant something…makes you feel all warm, fuzzy and springy!  Happy Spring

  • Nice looking garden! What do you use for the bugs?

    • I generally use 7 dust, but I do keep an eye on them and try to pick them off by hand. The garden is not too large so I can do that.

  • Love this idea. Especially living in an apartment. I love snipping fresh basil but can never get it to grow. You must tell me where to buy these boxes.

    • I had the same problem until I found the EarthBox. Exit west at Ellenton outlet mall, go 2 or 3 lights and make a right on Ellenton Gillette Road…you will be amazed. My thyme and oregano go crazy too.

  • blah blah blah Janet. Still haven’t warmed up since I got back to Wisconsin.

    • Awwwwwww, you and everyone else. You probably are just getting a bit of green on the ground instead of white? I heard all the bulbs are starting to hitch a ride with the birds when they migrate south. We are putting the a/c on more and more…I don’t like that either, it’s too expensive and much rather eat and spend time outside. We had a fire tonight and wore shorts and tank top…sorry.

      • I must have these earth boxes, GREASTEST idea for the ones that can’t garden like me! Yet I will get all the credit :)

  • I do not, but now that you mention it…I will make one. Thanks for asking.

  • Jon, I just jumped through the hoops and started a twitter account and will have a button added to my contact me area. Thanks for making me do this, now I just have to figure out how it all works.

  • I love this idea!
